Most wedding invitations have two separate envelopes, the outer envelope and the inner envelope, which contains the actual invitations. The following guidelines apply to addressing them:
To a married couple
Outer: Mr. and Mrs. husband's first and last name
Inner: Mr. and Mrs. last name
To a married couple with children under eighteen
Outer: Mr. and Mrs. husband's first and last name
Inner: Mr. and Mrs. last name
Child's name Child's name
To an unmarried couple at the same address
(on formal invitation, Ms. is accepted, but not preferred)
Outer: Miss (or Ms.) first and last name
Inner: Miss (or Ms.)
Mr. last name
To a single woman
(on a formal invitation, Ms. is accepted, but not preferred)
Outer: Miss (or Ms.) first and last name
Inner: Miss (or Ms.)
To a single man
Outer: Mr. first and last name
Inner: Mr. last name
To a widow, or a separate woman
Outer: Mrs. husband's first and last name
Inner: Mrs. last name
To a divorcee who is still using her former husband's name
(on a formal invitation, Ms. is accepted, but not preferred)
Outer: Mrs. (or Ms.) maiden name former husband's last name
or Mrs. (or Ms.) first name, maiden name, and former husband's last name
Inner: Mrs.(or Ms.) former husband's last name
To a married couple when the wife uses her maiden name
Outer: Ms. first name and maiden name and Mr. first and last name
(Both names are on the same line)
Inner: Ms. maiden name
Mr. last name
To a married couple, both doctors (Wife uses maiden name)
Outer: Dr. first name and maiden name and Dr. first name and last name
Inner: Dr. maiden name
Dr. last name
To a single man or woman and guest
Outer: Mr. first and last name
Inner: Mr. last name and Guest
To a married couple, both doctors
Outer: The Doctors last name
Inner: The Doctors last name
