Resources: Etiquette: Announcements

In these busy times when everyone's schedule is so full, it is a good idea to send out a written announcement about 6 months in advance, or as soon as possible if there is less time than that before the wedding. This can be a card, Save the Date magnet, or a post card. You can also begin by telling your parents, siblings, grandparents, and other close relatives and friends. The word will quickly spread. If your local newspaper accepts engagement announcements, you can also send a notice to them. If you live in a smaller community, that is a quick way to let many people know.

The wording on the announcements is usually very similar to what would be used on an invitation.
